This guide is designed to answer every question before you even need to ask it.
Choosing Your First Style: Keep It Simple
For a first braiding appointment, we generally recommend starting with a classic style rather than something highly complex. Box braids or knotless braids in a medium thickness are ideal first choices — they are versatile, relatively quick to install compared to micro braids, and give you a feel for how braids work and feel on your scalp before you commit to more elaborate options.
If you are unsure, browse our gallery page and save images of styles that appeal to you. Bring those images to your appointment — visual references make the consultation conversation much more productive than trying to describe a style in words.
Preparing Your Hair
The most important thing you can do before a braiding appointment is arrive with clean, detangled hair. Wash your hair 1 to 2 days before your appointment — the day before is ideal, as completely fresh wash-day hair can sometimes be too silky for braids to grip properly. Detangle thoroughly from ends to roots using a wide-tooth comb and a detangling conditioner.
Avoid applying heavy styling products, gels, or butters on the day of your appointment. A light leave-in conditioner or nothing at all is perfect. Stretched hair is easier to braid — if your hair is a tighter curl pattern, you may wish to blow-dry it on a low heat setting or twist and unravel it the day before to reduce shrinkage, though this is not essential.
How Long Will It Take?
Installation times vary significantly by style and thickness:
- Large/jumbo knotless braids: 2 to 3 hours
- Medium box or knotless braids: 3 to 5 hours
- Small knotless braids: 5 to 7 hours
- Micro braids: 7 to 9 hours
- Cornrows: 1 to 3 hours depending on complexity
- Fulani or Goddess braids: 2 to 4 hours.
We recommend eating a proper meal before your appointment and bringing headphones, a book, or something to watch on your phone. Bringing a comfortable pillow to rest your arms or lean back slightly can also make a long appointment much more comfortable.
Will It Hurt?
Honest answer: there may be some tension during installation, particularly at the edges and nape where the skin is more sensitive. Whether you experience this as uncomfortable or simply noticeable varies significantly between individuals — hair texture, scalp sensitivity and the skill of your stylist all play a role.
At BraidsnCo, we work with your scalp, not against it. We do not believe in braiding tighter than necessary, and we will always adjust tension if you tell us something is too tight. You should feel free to speak up during your appointment — a good stylist will never be offended by a client asking for lighter tension.
If you have a known sensitive scalp, tell us at the start of your consultation. We will choose a technique — almost certainly knotless braids — and a parting pattern that minimises tension throughout.
Some tenderness in the first 24 to 48 hours after installation is normal, particularly if it is your first time. This typically resolves on its own. A warm (not hot) compress and a mild painkiller such as ibuprofen can help if needed.
What About the Extension Hair?
Most braided styles use synthetic extension hair — typically Kanekalon — to add length and body. We supply all extension hair as part of your service price, so you do not need to purchase or bring your own unless you have a specific brand preference.
If you have known sensitivities to synthetic hair, let us know before your appointment. We can pre-treat the extension hair with apple cider vinegar to reduce the alkaline coating that sometimes causes scalp irritation.
After Your Appointment: The First Week

- Wear a satin bonnet every night from day one
- Do not wash for the first 48 to 72 hours
- Moisturise your scalp lightly every 2 to 3 days
- Avoid very tight updo styles while the scalp is still adjusting
